Is there anything worse than relaxing in your house on a rainy day, only to have your internet or favorite streaming service unexpectedly crash?

Most of us have been there before and are left to wonder if it is the weather that is causing these issues or a faulty connection.

Many times, if the rain or wind is bad enough, it is indeed the weather that is to blame. In this article we will discuss certain instances where the weather is at fault for your lagging or crashing internet and other times when it may just be an issue with your equipment.

If bad weather is severe enough, yes

If there are extremely high winds, heavy rains or hail coming down outside of your home or business when the internet lags or goes out completely, the weather is probably the culprit of your issues.

Severe weather conditions like these can damage utility poles near your home which will affect the internet cabling that runs to your property. Even if underground cabling is used in your neighborhood, extremely low temperatures can cause the wires to become damaged or tear, causing issues with your internet.

Heavy rain is one of the biggest culprits

As mentioned above, heavy rains can be one of the biggest things to worry about when it comes to having a secure internet connection.

When hard rains fall, it can cause damage to both cabling and wireless signals which can result in your coverage faltering or failing completely. In fact, the lightest of rain can absorb radio frequencies that allow for a wireless internet connection to work properly.

High winds play a factor as well

High winds are another issue that can affect the internet connection in your home. No matter if it be a wired or wireless connection, high winds can slow down internet speeds and even knock over or damage power lines that play an important role in the signal of your internet.

If the weather isn’t awful, it could be your equipment

If the weather outside of your home or place of business isn’t particularly bad, and your experiencing issues with your internet connection, there may be a problem with your equipment or even high traffic on your network.

If you have a large family that enjoys watching Netflix, browsing the internet or playing video games online, your internet connection may simply be overworked.

Another issue that may be affecting your connection is the distance between you and your router. If your router is in the living room, but you want to spend your rainy day curled up in bed, the extra distance could result in lower signal strength.

So, all in all, the rainy weather may not be the culprit for your poor internet connection. If anything, this is a sign to upgrade your network.
